Based on resolver’s experience to date, paying for your gym membership by direct debit is always advisable, and paying by monthly installments is best. You should never pay for a whole year up front, as it may be difficult to recover any money in the event of any dispute arising.
If you pay by monthly direct debit, in the even that you have a dispute over charges with the gym, you can cancel the direct debit payment to stop them from taking money from you.
