Based on resolver’s experience to date, this is one of the most common bugbears for car renters. In the past it was common to pick up the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. If you returned it with anything less than a full tank, it usually resulted in a rather hefty surcharge, but at least you had some control over how much you paid for. It is now increasingly common to pick up a car with an empty tank and pay for the fuel up front (with inflated prices) and, as you will probably return the car with a small amount of petrol in it, you will have lost out.

If you feel that you have overpaid or been unfairly charged, resolver recommends that you submit your concern in writing to the company. If you are unhappy with the company’s response, resolver recommends that you contact one of the bodies that deal with car rental disputes. If you booked your car direct with a hire company, the European Car Rental Conciliation Service (ECRCS) provides a free service to deal with Europe-wide disputes. There is also the European Consumer Centres Network which will investigate any breaches of European contract law free of charge.
